SI South Perth members attended the UN Women IWD Breakfast at PCEC and were delighted to host eight female students from our local schools.
The guest speakers were Elizabeth Gaines (CEO Fortescue Metal Group) and Zara Fisher (Vice President, HSE Iron Ore, Rio Tinto) in a panel discussion with Karla Grant (Presenter, Journalist and Executive Producer of Current Affairs, NITV and SBS). The speakers shared their experiences and views on women in leadership and gender equality in the workplace.
It was a great morning with a great theme – More Powerful Together – recognising it takes all of us, working in collaboration, to break down stereotypes and gendered roles to create a world women and girls have equal rights and opportunities.
SI South Perth once again supported the City of South Perth at its Australia Day Celebration Zone. It is the tenth year that we have been involved with the event and a roster of ten Soroptimists ran the Event tent, providing maps, answering queries, handing out sunscreen and give-aways, and providing ID wristbands to parents of young children.
The family-friendly event spanned 10 hectares and included 100 free activities and roving entertainment, a range of food vendors and ample shade and picnic areas for families to enjoy throughout the afternoon. Over 180,000 people visited the foreshore to soak up the sunshine and atmosphere and our team of volunteers enjoyed a well-earned sleep after the fireworks.
From 25 November to 10 December is the United Nations 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence Campaign. It is a time to galvanise action to end violence against women and girls around the world. The international campaign originated from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991.
In support of this campaign, SI South Perth will be participating in the Annual Silent Memorial March which is held each year to commemorate and honour people who have died from family and domestic violence related incidents. Each year, between 18 and 24 people are murdered in Western Australia by a member of their family. Domestic homicides account for a quarter of all homicides in Western Australia and most commonly this is women being killed at the hands of their partners.
You are welcome to join us at what is a very moving and significant event in our effort to end domestic violence.
